Job Description

MiCT is calling for proposals for freelance Security Advisory Expert in the framework of its program “MiCT Fellowship for Critical Voices 2026-2027” in East Africa, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. This is a freelance position running from September 2026 - June 2027 to be based in Kenya and/or Uganda. MiCT invites interested and qualified persons to submit proposals by 23:59 CET on 30.08.2026.

Introducing MiCT:

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation delivering expert media services in complex and challenging contexts with passion, precision, and agility.

Through collaborative work with partners, MiCT fosters transparent, inclusive, and fair dialogue supporting resilient societies. Operating across three continents and 15 countries, MiCT facilitates journalist training, media content production, research, monitoring, and supports the financial sustainability of media partners.

About the Project:

Since 2022, the MiCT Fellowship for Critical Voices has supported at-risk journalists and media professionals from conflict regions, enabling them to continue their essential work in safety. The programme is part of the Hannah Arendt Initiative and a member of the Journalists in Distress Network. It offers stipends, security and equipment support, (mental) health services, legal aid, relocation, and professional development through regional hubs.

Description of the role:

To support the Fellows from East Africa, MiCT is looking to provide support and guidance on security matters. Deliverables include, but are not limited to:

Risk Assessment

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments for fellows based in East Africa, identifying key risks and vulnerabilities that may impact the fellows’ and team’s safety and operations.

Safety and Digital Security Workshops

  • Facilitate engaging training modules, either virtually or on-site, for the Nairobi team and fellows, focusing on physical and digital safety.
  • Conduct follow up evaluations to assess participants`learning and improve future trainings

One-on-One Consultancy

  • Provide one-on-one security consultancy sessions to fellows and the team to address specific security concerns.
  • Emergency security incident response and crisis support
  • Ensure fellows have access to ongoing advice as situations evolve in their specific locations.

What we offer:

We welcome applicants based in Kenya and/or Uganda. MiCT reserves the right to employ one or multiple security providers in each country. Contracts will run from September 2026 until June 2027 on a freelance, ad-hoc, needs basis. No minimum number of hours or needs assessments can be assured.

Application Requirements:

Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in security risk management in East Africa.
  • Experience working with journalists in crisis and conflict contexts.
  • Proven experience in conducting security assessments and crisis management.
  • Ability to develop and deliver security training and one-on-one consultancy.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with diverse teams.
  • Fluency in English (knowledge of local languages is an advantage).
  • Flexibility and teamwork.
  • The position requires availability in Nairobi, Kenya and/or in Kampala, Uganda for 3 months per half year implementation period

Offers must remain valid and binding for 60 days from the submission deadline above.
