Background
FilmAid Kenya, in partnership with the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF), is implementing the Sport in Crisis Film Grant & Masterclass Programme to support emerging filmmakers from Kakuma and Kalobeyei in producing authentic documentary films that highlight the transformative role of sport in refugee and host communities.
The programme combines professional masterclasses, mentorship, and production grants to strengthen local filmmaking capacity while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, ethically produced documentary films.
To support participating filmmakers, FilmAid Kenya seeks experienced mentors to provide technical guidance, editorial oversight, and professional coaching throughout the development, production, and post-production process.
Purpose
The mentor will provide technical, creative, and editorial guidance to selected filmmakers throughout the story development, production, and post-production process while strengthening their documentary filmmaking skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Mentor filmmakers in story development and documentary production.
- Review story treatments, scripts, and production plans.
- Provide technical guidance during filming and post-production.
- Facilitate selected masterclass sessions.
- Review rough and final cuts and provide editorial feedback.
- Promote ethical storytelling, safeguarding, and informed consent practices.
- Support filmmakers to deliver high-quality films within project timelines.
Deliverables
- Mentorship throughout the programme.
- Participation in masterclasses and editorial review sessions.
- Technical feedback on story treatments, scripts, and film edits.
- Brief mentorship report with recommendations.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years' experience in documentary filmmaking or related fields.
- Strong storytelling, editorial, and mentoring skills.
- Experience working with youth or in humanitarian/development contexts is an added advantage.
- Commitment to ethical storytelling and safeguarding principles.
