Job Summary

The Instructor – Fashion Design and Garment Construction will provide practical training to women participants, helping them develop the skills needed to produce quality garments for employment and self-employment.

The instructor will lead fashion design, fabric knowledge, measurement, pattern-making, cutting and fitting, and coordinate participant assessment. The roles require strong practical sewing and garment-construction skills, together with the ability to teach participants with different literacy levels and prior experience.

The instructor will work alongside a second technical instructor who leads industrial sewing, embroidery, finishing and machinery maintenance. Both instructors will deliver a coordinated programme covering the complete garment-production process. Business, entrepreneurship and market-linkage activities will be handled by a separate, dedicated facilitator.

Key Responsibilities

Training Delivery and Training Course content update

•

Develop, update and implement the approved training programme with the second instructor, ensuring clear learning outcomes and progression from basic to advanced skills.

•

Prepare lesson plans, demonstrations, visual references, practical assignments and competency checklists.

•

Deliver practical instruction through demonstrations, supervised exercises and repeated garment-production assignments.

•

Adapt teaching methods to participants’ literacy levels, existing skills and learning needs.

•

Identify the fabrics, accessories, tools and equipment required for each module.

•

Align lessons with the product needs and skills gaps identified in the project’s market assessment.

Fashion Design and Fabric Knowledge

•

Teach fashion sketching, colour coordination and interpretation of customer ideas, photographs and design references.

•

Guide participants to develop original designs combining contemporary modest fashion with Somali cultural styles.

•

Teach identification of fabrics and their names, including their weight, stretch, transparency, durability and appropriate uses.

•

Demonstrate selection of suitable linings, interfacing, structural materials and accessories.

•

Develop labelled fabric samples and visual references to strengthen participants’ material knowledge.

Pattern-Making, Cutting and Fitting

•

Teach accurate body measurement and adaptation to different body shapes.

•

Demonstrate pattern blocks, drafting, manipulation, draping, grading and pattern correction.

•

Teach fabric preparation, alignment, layout and calculation of material requirements.

•

Supervise accurate cutting and efficient material use to minimise waste.

•

Lead fitting and alterations, correcting problems with garment length, sleeves, waist, proportions, looseness and tightness.

Sewing and Garment Construction

•

Teach and reinforce sewing and construction techniques through complete garment assignments.

•

Train participants in core garments, including abayas, toobs/dresses, dirac, hijabs, skirts, trousers and uniforms.

•

Progress to advanced products such as women’s suits, graduation dresses, bridal wear and corset-style garments, according to participant competence and available resources.

•

Coordinate with the second instructor on assembly methods, decoration, finishing and pressing.

•

Support production exercises using approved samples, standard measurements and consistent specifications for institutional products.

•

Ensure completed garments reflect the intended design, fit and quality requirements.

Participant Assessment and Learning Support

•

Coordinate practical assessment schedules and competency checklists with the second instructor.

•

Assess design interpretation, material selection, measurement, pattern-making, cutting, fit and material efficiency.

•

Consolidate assessment results provided by the second instructor for sewing, machine operation, embroidery and finishing.

•

Maintain participant progress records and provide constructive feedback and additional practice where needed.

•

Require each participant to independently complete at least one garment through the full production process.

•

Prepare progress summaries and support independent competency verification arranged by Somaliland Y-PEER.

Equipment Use and Training Materials

•

Demonstrate proper handling of sewing machines, cutting tools and other equipment used during assigned lessons.

•

Reinforce routine machine care and safe working practices.

•

Report faults and servicing needs to the second instructor, who holds primary responsibility for troubleshooting and maintenance oversight.

•

Identify material and consumable requirements in advance to support uninterrupted lessons.

•

Support supervised use of shared equipment by trained beneficiaries where assigned.

Collaboration and Capacity Building

•

Coordinate teaching with the second instructor to avoid gaps and unnecessary duplication.

•

Share responsibility for complete garment assignments while leading the designated specialist areas.

•

Provide technical information, such as material quantities and production time, for exercises delivered by the business facilitator.

•

Transfer knowledge fully and support the capacity of local instructional personnel.

•

Maintain teaching materials, patterns and assessment resources for continued use by the Centre.

Relationships

The position reports to the Project Manager and works closely with the second technical instructor, the dedicated business facilitator and the project team.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Educational Qualifications and Experience

Education

•

A university bachelor’s degree, or a recognised advanced technical/vocational qualification with substantial practical training, in Fashion Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Garment or Apparel Technology, Textile Technology, Clothing and Textile Studies, or a closely related discipline.

•

The qualification must include substantial practical garment design and construction. Relevant qualifications may be awarded by recognised universities, technical institutes, vocational institutions, or professional training bodies in the relevant field.

•

A teaching qualification, vocational instructor certification or training in competency-based education and assessment is an added advantage.

Experience

•

Minimum 2 years of demonstrated professional experience in fashion design, pattern-making, cutting, sewing, garment construction and fitting.

•

Practical experience producing everyday garments and more complex fitted or structured clothing.

•

Experience teaching, coaching or supervising learners in tailoring, fashion or garment production.

•

Experience preparing lesson materials, organising practical exercises and assessing completed garments.

•

Experience identifying and correcting pattern, construction and fitting defects.

•

Experience working with women learners and participants with varied literacy levels is an advantage.

Language Requirements

•

Applicants must have sufficient spoken and written English proficiency to prepare training materials, communicate with the project team and deliver technical instruction in English where required. International applicants must provide evidence of this proficiency.

•

Applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency, such as recognised English-language qualification, or an official university letter confirming that their degree was taught and assessed in English.

•

English communication and teaching ability will also be assessed through an interview and a practical teaching demonstration conducted in English.

•

Somali-language proficiency is an advantage. For instructors who do not speak Somali, delivery will be supported by agreed Somali interpretation or instructional support to ensure participants understand the lessons and can communicate effectively.
