What we do

Since 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has worked to preserve human dignity and

relieve suffering caused by war and armed violence.

In collaboration with our Red Cross and Red Crescent partners around the world, we do everything we can to

deliver life-saving aid, reconnect families and locate missing people – helping those who need it most, regardless of

who they are and what side of the front line they are on.

We engage with authorities and armed forces on all sides, often confidentially, pressing for access to detainees to

improve their living conditions and urging compliance with international humanitarian law to protect noncombatants, including from digital threats.

Purpose

The Generalist Field Officer represents the ICRC in the field and contributes to strengthening the organization’s

acceptance and understanding among local communities and other stakeholders.

The Job holder is responsible for networking within the area of responsibility. They facilitate and contribute to the

identification of humanitarian concerns and support the smooth implementation of ICRC activities through regular

field visits.

Additionally, the GFO contributes to the security analysis, monitors developments in the operational context and

provides regular and timely reporting on issues within the AoR.

This is a national/resident position based in Huddur, Somalia.

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

  • Monitors the security, political, economic, and social developments and their impact on the population and

shares oral and written analysis of the same on a timely and regular basis

  • Supports Identification humanitarian needs resulting from the conflict or natural factors, and proposes course

of action

  • Contributes to the analysis and to the planning of activities in consultation with specialists/generalists in the

area of responsibility

  • Regularly reviews the security situation in the AoR, based on own analysis, contacts with stakeholders such

as authorities, elders, and parties to the conflict

  • Provides an up-to-date security analysis prior, during and after the field trips and informs the team and

management of any changes that could impact on the team and beneficiaries’ security

  • Supports in implementation and following up of various field activities, in accordance with objectives
  • Identifies, develops and maintains a network of contacts among local authorities, parties to the conflict,

traditional leaders, humanitarian organisations, and members of civil society

  • Represents the ICRC with a view to strengthening its acceptance, access and security, and the respect of

its principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence, according to the guidelines provided

  • Supports in Projects supervision or by giving input to the departments on the activities planned or

implemented

  • Participates in the administrative follow up of field missions, ensuring timely coordination, documentation and

completion of related administrative details

  • Collects, compiles and translates/interprets project related information, contributing to accurate and timely

written reports

  • Participates in internal and external meetings and briefings related to field activities

Qualifications & Requirements

Certifications / Education required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies or relevant qualification in a related field of

study

Professional experience required

  • 5 years’ progressive work experience in a similar field of activity
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with the various stakeholders
  • Excellent knowledge of political, economic, social and cultural environment of this region
