Closing Date: 15th September 2025 ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The Consultant Ophthalmology Surgeon will strengthen the Eritrean eye health system by supporting training programs at Orotta College of Medicine & Health Sciences department of ophthalmology as well as contributing to the quality service delivery systems at all levels. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Support the development of collaborative, quality, sustainable systems for eye care education in Eritrea in your role as faculty at the Orotta College of medicine and Health Sciences. Support curriculum development and review processes as required to ensure curriculums meet regional and global standards. Develop and deliver lectures, seminars and workshops on ophthalmic topics for residency ophthalmology and ophthalmic nurses, medical students and others. Undertake administrative requirements of the ophthalmic components of the course such as preparation of training schedules and lecture notes, examinations and marking as per the need. Deliver classroom and practical (clinical, surgical as well as wet lab) education and training for the ophthalmic components of the course. Implement course resource needs and ensure they are included in the planning process. Evaluate studentsâ performance and provide constructive feedback. Generate a co-operative environment and provide assistance and support for all staff and students. Support the head of eye health department in order to maintain a high standard, effective and efficient teaching process. Support the delivery of eye health services at Berhan Ayini National Referral Eye Hospital (BENREH) by providing training in other clinical services 40-50% of LOE is assigned to providing quality training and skilled surgical service delivery at Berhan Ayini Hospital. Perform a variety of diagnostics and therapeutic procedures and demonstrate those to ophthalmic residents, ophthalmic nurses and others as found necessary. Provide expert training for cataract and glaucoma surgery, including training in manual small incision cataract surgery where required. Work for high clinical quality standards and maintain high productivity at Berhan Ayni hospital. Provide eye care clinical and surgical service delivery as required. Contribute to the quality and reputation of eye health education and services in Eritrea Ensure that all direct eye care services of partner hospital are delivered safely and conform to acceptable global standards. Support partner eye hospital to develop quality assurance system for patient care and safety. Ensure that the foundation minimum standard for cataract service quality care is fully implemented at Berhan Ayni hospital. When necessary, the ophthalmologist will support the introduction of minimum standard assessment tool (MSAT) of Berhan Ayni and other eye care facilities outside Asmara. Track, measure, evaluate, and report on the clinical outcomes of patients operated for cataract and other diseases including support in implementation and rollout of the Cataract Surgical Outcome Monitoring tool (CSOM) tool. Provide expert opinion on the equipment for Berah Ayini hospital that include review of equipment lists, specifications, technical considerations, and functionality of equipment and learnings. Through teaching and clinical work, support the development of a patient centered approach to eye health services in Eritrea. Treat patients with respect and ensure they receive high quality eye care. Proactively contributes to the development of the divisional strategy. Generate a co-operative team environment and provide assistance and support for eye clinic staff. Constructively contribute and collaborate with all colleagues Delivery high quality work that supports The Foundationâs global operating environment Fulfil reporting responsibilities Provide a written report of academic activities at the end of each semester outlining activities, achievements, and challenges, to the head of the ophthalmology department and the dean of the college. Provide quarterly performance report to the foundation senior program manager outlining academic and clinical activities, achievements, and challenges, that approved by head of ophthalmology department and college dean. The ophthalmologist will serve as a focal person for matters related to Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives on cataract service pathway in Eritrea. This will involve supporting CQI activities on eye care service delivery in general and on cataracts services in particular. The ophthalmologist will be a focal point for CSOM data collection and reporting and other quality processes and expected to closely work with the medical advisor for Africa and Middle East of the foundation. Regularly reporting to the Hospital medical director regarding service delivery and practical service at the national referral hospital. As required, contribute to the maintenance of the MOH patient data systems for eye care service Monitoring & Evaluation. WHAT YOUâLL NEED TO SUCCEED Minimum of three years MD having one specialty among Retina, glaucoma, Pediatric Ophthalmology or anterior segment and graduated from a reputed institution. Registered with the national medical council for practicing ophthalmology Experience in teaching including working as a trainer for cataract surgery. Experience as a trainer for cataract surgeries, including small incision cataract surgery Commitment to patient centred, quality services, and data collection and analysis to provide the evidence for services Training in other relevant ophthalmic subspecialties Understanding of working and training conditions in developing countries and the flexibility to work in challenging contexts is highly desirable Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and a commitment to collaboration The ability to bring energy and enthusiasm to the development of eye health services in Eritrea Having one subspecialty, preferably on Retina but other specialty is also possible Individual research work and publications. Previous experience in a leadership role. Experience working and training in developing countries and challenging contexts.
