FOR AGRICULTURE & EXTENSION OFFICER

Position Title: Agriculture & Extension Officer

Duty Station: Beledweyne, Hirshabelle State, Somalia (with frequent travel to project locations across SouthCentral Somalia)

Department: Agriculture & Extension Services

Reports To: Operations Manager / Managing Director

Contract Type: Full-Time

and veterinary services to pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, smallholder farmers, cooperatives, NGOs, and government

programs. The company responds to critical gaps in animal health, crop productivity, access to quality inputs,

climate resilience, and extension services across South-Central Somalia.

Som AgroVet Ltd operates a mobile, community-based, and market-oriented service model, combining veterinary

care, livestock management, agricultural advisory, input supply, training, and project implementation support. The

company aims to become a trusted national agro-veterinary service provider, supporting food security, livelihoods,

and economic recovery.

Job Purpose

The Agriculture & Extension Officer is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring agricultural

development activities aimed at improving crop productivity, food security, climate resilience, and farmer

livelihoods. The officer will provide technical support to farmers, cooperatives, agribusinesses, NGOs, and

government partners through extension services, training, demonstrations, and advisory support.

The position will focus on promoting sustainable agriculture, climate-smart farming practices, irrigation

management, improved crop production techniques, post-harvest management, and agricultural value chain

development.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Agricultural Extension Services

 Provide agricultural advisory and extension services to farmers and producer groups.

 Conduct regular farm visits and technical assessments.

 Promote adoption of improved farming technologies and practices.

 Support establishment of farmer field schools and demonstration plots.

 Facilitate knowledge transfer and practical learning opportunities for farmers.

Crop Production Support

 Provide technical guidance on land preparation, planting, crop management, and harvesting.

 Promote the use of improved seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural inputs.

 Advise farmers on crop diversification and sustainable production systems.

 Support production of cereals, pulses, vegetables, fruits, and fodder crops.

 Monitor crop performance and productivity indicators.

Climate-Smart Agriculture

 Promote climate-resilient farming techniques.

 Support water conservation and efficient irrigation practices.

 Train farmers on drought mitigation and adaptation measures.

 Encourage sustainable land management and soil conservation practices.

 Promote agroforestry and environmental protection initiatives.

Irrigation and Water Management

 Provide technical support on irrigation systems and water-use efficiency.

 Monitor irrigation infrastructure performance.

 Train farmers on irrigation scheduling and maintenance.

 Promote modern irrigation technologies suitable for Somali farming systems.

 Support rehabilitation and establishment of small-scale irrigation schemes.

Farmer Capacity Building

 Design and deliver agricultural training programs.

 Develop extension materials, manuals, and awareness campaigns.

 Organize workshops, field days, and farmer exchange visits.

 Strengthen farmer groups, cooperatives, and producer associations.

 Support youth and women participation in agricultural development.

Agricultural Input Supply and Agribusiness Support

 Provide technical support for distribution and utilization of agricultural inputs.

 Advise farmers on proper use of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and farming equipment.

 Support development of agribusiness opportunities and market linkages.

 Promote commercial farming and value addition initiatives.

 Assist farmers in accessing markets and agricultural services.

Pest and Disease Management

 Monitor crop pests, diseases, and invasive species.

 Recommend integrated pest management (IPM) approaches.

 Provide technical advice on safe pesticide use and application.

 Conduct pest and disease surveillance activities.

 Coordinate response measures during crop disease outbreaks.

Project Implementation and Technical Support

 Support implementation of agricultural projects funded by NGOs, UN agencies, government institutions,

and private-sector clients.

 Participate in baseline surveys, needs assessments, and agricultural studies.

 Contribute technical inputs to project proposals and work plans.

 Support monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities.

 Ensure project activities meet quality standards and targets.

Monitoring, Reporting and Documentation

 Collect, analyze, and report agricultural production data.

 Maintain records of trainings, field visits, demonstrations, and beneficiary engagement.

 Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.

 Document success stories, lessons learned, and best practices.

 Maintain accurate agricultural databases and records.

Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships

 Coordinate with government agricultural departments, NGOs, farmer groups, and development partners.

 Build strong relationships with agricultural cooperatives and community leaders.

 Represent Som AgroVet Ltd in technical meetings and agricultural forums.

 Promote collaboration and partnerships that support agricultural development

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Qualifications

Education

 Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Crop Science, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural

Economics, Irrigation Engineering, or a related field.

 Professional certification in agriculture or extension services is an added advantage.

Experience

 Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in agricultural extension, crop production, or agricultural

development.

 Experience working with smallholder farmers and rural communities.

 Experience implementing agricultural projects in Somalia or similar contexts.

 Previous NGO, private-sector, or government agricultural experience is desirable.

Technical Skills

 Strong knowledge of crop production systems and agricultural extension methodologies.

 Knowledge of climate-smart agriculture and irrigation management.

 Experience in farmer training and capacity building.

 Familiarity with agricultural value chains and market systems.

 Strong data collection, analysis, and report-writing skills.

 Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Language Requirements

 Fluency in Somali and English (written and spoken).
