Job Description Position Title: WASH Engineering Intern Reports To: Project Officer Division: CWS Africa Department: Programs Job Location: Tana River, Kenya Grade Level: Internship, National Duration: 3 months Introduction: Church World Service (CWS) is a not-for-profit, faith-based organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable solutions to hunger, poverty, displacement, and disaster. Primary Purpose This position will provide support to the implementation of the water and sanitation project within Garsen, Tana River County. The goal of the project is to provide sustainable and equitable access to clean water for households living in IDP camps and empower them to manage and maintain their water supply systems effectively. The intern will work closely with project officer, program manager and hydrogeologist. The WASH engineer intern will assist with water infrastructure design, planning, and project execution, including technical specifications, analysing bill of quantities, and site monitoring. Responsibilities Participate in project weekly and monthly project activity planning. Field inspections, data analysis, and collaboration with senior engineers, borehole drillers and stakeholders on water supply. Conduct site visits for monitoring performance of existing infrastructure, site assessments, and data collection. Support the analysis of data related to water quality, system performance, and non-revenue water reduction efforts Supervise water pipeline development ensuring all specifications are adhered to. Work with senior engineers, project officer, clients, and government agencies to gather input and present information Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly project reports both quantitative and qualitative, aspects of the project. Support the project officer to document project success stories and lessons learned and share with project for documentation monthly. Other duties as assigned by the project officer and program manager. Minimum Qualifications: Education The Intern should be: A recent graduate of a degree or diploma program in Science Water and Environmental Engineering (Agricultural/Civil/Mechanical Engineering), Water Supply and Sanitation Engineering, Water Resource or Environmental Engineering or Public Health Engineering or equivalent. Interest or knowledge in community development, livelihoods projects or humanitarian work. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Technical Knowledge Foundational understanding of water supply, and relevant modelling software. Essential skills include CAD and GIS software proficiency, analytical ability, strong communication, and a foundational understanding of hydrology and hydraulic modelling Communication; Strong oral and written communication skills, with an ability to liaise effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders. Ability to function proactively and positively as a team member. Abilities: The Intern – WASH Engineering must have the ability to: Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Follow instructions with a positive and receptive attitude. A proactive attitude and readiness to learn on the job. Deal effectively and courteously with collaborators, government agencies, and members of the public. Conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner to represent the best interests of CWS Africa. Maintain a high-performance standard with attention to detail. Carry out all of the duties of the position efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision. Take initiative in the development and completion of projects within the specified timeframe. Maintain strict confidentiality with CWS and operational information. Manage a large and diverse workload under pressure with competing priorities. Work well as a team in a multi-cultural environment while maintaining a high level of motivation. Effectively manage CWS resources; and Important Requirements: Strong English communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment required. Special Requirements: The candidate should be of good health, willing and able to travel extensively in often difficult conditions and have a high degree of flexibility. This position is based in Tana River, Kenya Background checks which include references, and an educational and criminal check is required before the start of employment for international applicants. A valid driving license (Class A) and the ability to maintain a valid driving license throughout the entire appointment is required. Physical: This position requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, pushing/pulling, handling objects (manual dexterity), reaching above shoulder level, using fine finger movements and lifting/carrying heavy loads. Environmental: Incumbents in this position will be exposed to excessive noise, marked changes in temperature and/or humidity, dust and infectious diseases, harsh weather climates, long work hours, bumpy roads, extended travel, excessive sun exposure, and non-ventilated spaces. Full time All employees should be prepared to work from the CWS office within their location of hire.
