BACKGROUND AND ORGANISATION OF WORK The Paediatric Anaesthetist will work as part of a team of health professionals – experts or in training – organising and directing the training of the local medical and health care staff in his/her area of responsibility, in collaboration with Paediatric Surgeons and the Medical Coordinator, who is in charge of the management and organisation of the project. Paediatric surgical activity requires the direct involvement of other professional figures – from the medical (Paediatricians, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Medical Social Workers), clinical services (Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy) and nursing areas – in the process of diagnosing and treating patients. The Paediatric Anaesthetist will work in: OPERATING THEATRES supervising Anaesthesia Residents and Junior Anaesthetists: the distribution of the various tasks will be decided on the basis of individual skills and expertise. The Children’s Surgical Hospital has 3 OTs with the capacity to carry out up to 6-10 operations per day , including major and minor surgeries , as well as managing NORA (dressing or CT-scan in sedation) and possible Out Patients Department (OPD) and hospital emergencies. The equipment includes CVC/arterial positioning, epidural analgesia intra and post-operative, loco-regional anesthesia, US-guided, according to the needs and the shared plan with senior and surgeons. PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (PICU): 6 beds (1 isolation) full equipped with ventilators for invasive and non-invasive ventilation, NIV and HFNC. Patients in PICU are usually postoperative, monitored after major surgeries and/or children in critical conditions or with severe organ failure. The workload is organised in shifts in order to guarantee patient care 24/7. The rotation may vary according to the clinical needs and organisational set-up of the centre. On-call will include nights and holidays. MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING OF LOCAL PERSONNEL Clinical activities and patient care are always carried out alongside and in collaboration with local personnel, who thus benefit from training in the field. There is also provision for more specific teaching activities, managed by the international specialists, in accordance with the clinical protocols in use and as agreed with the Medical Coordinator. CASELOAD AND EQUIPMENT The technological level of the equipment present in the Centre is suited to the clinical and managerial protocols in use, and the level of professional autonomy of the national staff, with the aim of achieving – and sustaining – high standards of care. Diagnostic equipment, basic laboratory tests, technical and auxiliary services are always available. CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN PEDIATRIC SURGERY – UGANDA The Centre of Excellence in Paediatric Surgery in Entebbe, opened in 2021, offers free treatment of excellence in Paediatric Surgery; it is a reference point for Ugandan patients and children with surgical needs (up to 15 years of age) from all over Africa. Entebbe Hospital is the second structure of ANME (African Network of Medical Excellence), the “Health Network of Excellence in Africa” created in 2009 to develop free healthcare systems of excellence in the continent. The Centre of Excellence in Paediatric Surgery puts into practice our healthcare model based on the principles of Equality, Quality and Social Responsibility (EQS) . As confirmed by World Health Organization data, Uganda is still a long way from achieving the Millennium Goals on reducing child mortality. 40% of Uganda’s population is under 15 years old, but there are only 3 Paediatric Surgeons in the country for a population of 45 million. Infant mortality under 5 years of age is 55 children per 1,000 living at birth and 30% of deaths of patients over 5 years of age are due to lack of surgical treatment. The hospital will have 72 beds, 3 operating theatres, a 6-bed paediatric intensive care unit and all the diagnostic and auxiliary services necessary for its operation, such as laboratory, blood bank, pharmacy, canteen, laundry. The admission criteria are as follows: General Paediatric Surgery; Paediatric Urology; The following are excluded in this first phase: Neonatal Surgery, Emergency and Trauma Surgery, Oncological Surgery and Specialist Paediatric Surgery. GUIDELINES, PROTOCOLS AND EQUIPMENT Further information on the guidelines, protocols and clinical services relevant to the post along with details of the instruments and equipment available will be provided at interview and during the period of preparation for the mission. The general requirements and conditions apply to all the international staff. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS 6 months availability Medical degree, and current professional registration on the medical register of your Country of residence; Specialisation in Anaesthesia or Anaesthesia and Intensive Care At least 2 years’ relevant professional experience in Paediatric Anaesthesia, proved by a list of anaesthesia procedures performed. English level – at least B2 Interventions list appropriate to the professional and training path In order to proceed with the selection process, the following documentation must be produced in addition to the CV: – surgical case history signed by the Hospital Health Management or Institute where you work, from the beginning of your career to the current date – certificates of hospital positions held since the beginning of your career, related to clinical and non-academic activity REQUIRED AVAILABILITY 6 months overseas stay including a period of leave to be taken at the end of the mission in agreement with the coordinator. Shorter missions may only be considered for specific needs as defined by the organisation.
